Environmental Scan
A good place to start the process of establishing a Healthy TuckShop is to undertake an environmental scan. The environmental scan will allow you to clearly see what is currently happening within your school environment with relation to food and nutrition.
Once you have a clear picture of your school's food and nutrition environment you will be able to identify whether there are any areas requiring change. During this scan you should also be able to identify key stakeholders and key supporters, both internal and external, who may be able to support the change process.
Areas you may identify as requiring change, or review, may include:
l The School Food Policy
l Vending machines
l School culture and practices
l The tuck shop menu
l The support or management framework
Once you have identified areas requiring action you may wish to approach external organisations for support and collaboration in the change process (if you are not working with them already). For example, the National Heart Foundation (NHF), and Health Promoting Schools (HPS).
An example of this collaboration might be working with the
National Heart Foundation School food Programme facilitator
to gain an award for your Tuck Shop. See www.nhf.org.nz
for details.
Try a tool such as the Environmental Scan Template which you can use to undertake an environmental scan of your school's food and nutrition environment.
Repeating the environmental scan annually will allow you to track changes and record your progress towards having a Healthy Tuckshop.
* Some schools in the Counties Manukau area are trialling or using the CMDHB Let's Beat Diabetes Schools 'Accord Interagency Record of Involvement', which is held at the visitor sign-in space in the administration area and contains information about agencies and stakeholders likely to be working in the school in similar areas.
