Establishment of a Tuck Shop Committee
Following the initial environmental scan you would have identified key stakeholders and supporters who may wish to participate in the programme of change. We recommend establishing a Tuck Shop Committee that includes these key stakeholders and supporters. A Tuck Shop Committee can be an effective mechanism for managing the tuck shop and ensuring that the change programme workload is shared by an interested group of individuals within the school community, rather than placing additional workload on any one individual. The task of making changes is too large for just a few people, and requires the skills and expertise of a range of key staff, not forgetting input from students and parents.
A Tuck Shop Committee would ensure that the tuck shop establishes and retains a healthy food focus, and meets the objectives deemed important by the Board of Trustees and the school community. The committee would be responsible for monitoring the operation of the tuck shop in the long-term, including implementing and reviewing the school food policy. Important decisions may possibly be devolved to the committee dependent on how it is set up, such as; employing staff, authorising the purchase of equipment, facility upgrades, and changes to the menu.
The responsibility for overseeing the daily management of the tuck shop could be given to this committee - noting that the daily operation of the tuck shop is still the domain of the Tuck Shop Operator.
We recommend that the committee membership is open to all interested people within the school community.
The committee could include the following members:
l The Tuck Shop Operator;
l Principal or Deputy Principal;
l The school's Executive Officer or similar;
l School Nurse or Public Health Nurse;
l A Student Representative;
Head of Department - Health;
l Board of Trustees Representative;
l Parent Representative;
l Representative from an organisation or group with similar interest (e.g. DPT, NHF, HPS).
