How the MOH Food and Beverage Classification System fits with this website?
This website evolved from the 2005 CMDHB 'Healthy
Tuckshop Framework' developed for use in Counties
Manukau High Schools. It has been updated to
complement and support the introduction of the MOH
Food and Beverage Classification System, providing
supporting resources, documentation, tools and links to
help schools with the practical hands on implementation.
These resources have been developed using the practical
experience of several years of implementing changes in
Counties Manukau High Schools and help take the new
guidelines further by considering the whole environment
not just the food itself.
In the User Guide: Food and Beverage Classification System for Years 1-13 (MOH, 2007) the classification system is described as "a tool that can be used to identify healthy food and drink options" (p.2), and divides food into three groups; Everyday, Sometimes and Occasional. At the simplest level, 'Occasional' group foods are defined as having low nutritional value, high fat, high sugar, high salt and excess energy, and are not suitable for provision in the school environment. The majority of food provided should fall into the 'Everyday' category, with 'Sometimes' foods also allowed to be sold. However, 'Sometimes' foods should not 'dominate the menu' according to the User Guide: F&BCS (MOH, 2007), and can be made more acceptable through careful choice and correct serving or portion size.
This website also gives an example of an innovative and successfully trialled approach of using Kombo style meals.
